The Preposition "En"
Spanish: La Preposición "En"
Level: B1 Intermediate
Category: prepositions
Explanation
The preposition "en" is one of the most common in Spanish and has three main uses you must master at the B1 level. First, "en" indicates location or place where something is: "Estoy en casa" (I am at home), "El libro está en la mesa" (The book is on the table). Unlike English, "en" covers the meanings of "in", "on" and "at" depending on context, so there isn't always a single translation. The second important use is with means of transport. We say "viajar en coche" (travel by car), "ir en tren" (go by train), "montar en bicicleta" (ride a bicycle). Here "en" is equivalent to English "by". The big exception is "a pie" (on foot), which does NOT use "en" but the preposition "a". The third use is with time periods: months, seasons, years and general parts of the day. For example: "en enero" (in January), "en verano" (in summer), "en 2024" (in 2024), "en la mañana" (in the morning). However, "en" is NOT used with days of the week; for those you use the article "el" or "los": "el lunes" (on Monday), "los martes" (on Tuesdays). Mastering "en" requires plenty of practice with real examples, because its usage depends on context and often doesn't match English. Pay special attention to the differences with "a" and to everyday situations like ordering in a café or buying tickets at the station.
