The Past Hypothetical Conditional (Third Conditional)

Spanish: El Condicional del Pasado Hipotético (Tercer Condicional)

Level: B2 Upper-Intermediate

Category: conditionals

Explanation

The third conditional is used to talk about past situations that did not happen, that is, unreal or impossible conditions because the moment has already passed. We imagine a past different from what actually occurred. For example: "Si hubiera estudiado más, habría aprobado el examen" (If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam) — but in reality I did not study and did not pass. The structure has two parts. The first is the "si" clause (the condition), which uses the pluperfect subjunctive: "hubiera" or "hubiese" + past participle. The second is the main clause (the result), which uses the conditional perfect: "habría" + past participle. The complete formula is: Si + hubiera/hubiese + participle, + habría + participle. The order of the clauses can be switched without changing the meaning: "Habría ido a la fiesta si me hubieras invitado" means the same as "Si me hubieras invitado, habría ido a la fiesta". It is important to remember that "hubiera" and "hubiese" are interchangeable in the "si" clause; both are correct. In everyday speech, "hubiera" is more common. This tense expresses regret, hypotheses about the past, or reproaches about decisions that can no longer be changed.
