The Preterite of SER and IR

Spanish: El pretérito de SER e IR

Level: A2 Elementary

Category: verbs

Explanation

In Spanish, the verbs SER (to be) and IR (to go) share exactly the same conjugation in the preterite tense. This might seem confusing at first, but it actually makes learning easier: you only need to memorize one set of forms for two verbs. The forms are: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. These verbs are irregular because they do not follow any regular conjugation pattern; you must learn them by heart. The context of the sentence is what tells you whether it is SER or IR. For example, "Fui profesor" means "I was a teacher" (SER), while "Fui al mercado" means "I went to the market" (IR). Usually, when the preposition "a" appears after the verb, it is IR (to go to a place). When it is followed by a noun, adjective, or describes an identity, it is usually SER. The preterite is used for completed actions in the past, with a defined beginning and end. That is why we use these forms to talk about where we went ("Ayer fui al museo") or how something was in the past ("La fiesta fue divertida"). Notice that none of these forms carry a written accent, unlike many other preterite verbs.
