The Present Progressive: estar + gerund (I am speaking)

Spanish: El Presente Progresivo: estar + gerundio (estoy hablando)

Level: A2 Elementary

Category: verbs

Explanation

The present progressive in Spanish is used to describe actions that are happening right now, at the very moment we are speaking. It is formed with the verb "estar" conjugated in the present tense plus the gerund (the -ing form) of the main verb. For example: "Estoy comiendo" means the action of eating is happening right now. The gerund is formed regularly based on the verb ending. Verbs ending in -ar change to -ando (hablar → hablando). Verbs ending in -er and -ir change to -iendo (comer → comiendo, vivir → viviendo). The verb "estar" is conjugated normally: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están. It is very important to understand that Spanish does NOT use the present progressive as much as English does. In English we say "I am working tomorrow," but in Spanish the progressive only describes what is happening NOW, at this exact moment. For habitual actions or future plans, we use the simple present. That is why "Trabajo mañana" is correct, but "Estoy trabajando mañana" sounds strange. Some verbs have irregular gerunds, especially when the stem ends in a vowel or when there is a change in the stem vowel. We will learn these special cases so you can speak naturally in everyday situations like at the café, the hotel, or the market.
