Explanation

The sequence of tenses (also called 'consecutio temporum') is the system of rules that determines which verb tense we must use in the subordinate clause according to the tense of the main verb. It is especially important in indirect speech and with verbs that require the subjunctive. When the main verb is in the present or future, the subordinate clause is usually in the present; when the main verb is in the past, the subordinate clause shifts toward the past. With the indicative mood, the shift is natural: 'Dice que viene' (He says he is coming) becomes 'Dijo que venía' (He said he was coming). The present becomes the imperfect, the present perfect becomes the pluperfect, and the future becomes the conditional. This mechanism reflects the temporal viewpoint from which we speak. With the subjunctive mood, the rules are stricter. If the main verb is in the present, future, or present perfect, the subordinate clause takes the present subjunctive: 'Quiero que vengas' (I want you to come). If the main verb is in any past tense (imperfect, preterite, pluperfect) or in the conditional, the subordinate clause takes the imperfect subjunctive: 'Quería que vinieras' (I wanted you to come). Mastering the sequence of tenses is essential at the B2 level because it allows you to build complex narratives, report what others said, and express nuances of simultaneity, anteriority, and posteriority with precision. Errors in this area often give away the non-native speaker.
