Explanation

Discourse markers are words or expressions that organize a text and guide the listener on how to interpret the relationship between ideas. They do not change the literal meaning of a sentence, but they signal the speaker's intention: contrast, addition, emphasis, or consequence. At the B2 level, mastering them is essential to sound natural and cohesive, both in speaking and writing. In this lesson we focus on three very common markers. "Sin embargo" (however) and "no obstante" (nevertheless) express contrast: they introduce an idea that opposes or qualifies what was said before. They are very similar, but "no obstante" has a more formal register and is used mainly in written texts, presentations, or academic contexts. "Sin embargo" works in any register, from everyday conversation to a formal essay. "De hecho" (in fact / actually) serves a different function: it reinforces or confirms what has just been said, often adding information that intensifies it or that is surprising. It is equivalent to the English "in fact" or "actually." While "sin embargo" and "no obstante" open a contrast, "de hecho" reinforces and makes things concrete. Punctuation is key with these connectors. When they appear at the beginning of a sentence, they are usually followed by a comma. When they are inserted within the sentence, they go between commas. Placing them correctly and separating them with the right punctuation is what distinguishes an upper-intermediate speaker from an advanced one.

• El tren sale a las ocho. Sin embargo, hoy lleva retraso. - The train leaves at eight. However, today it is delayed.
• No tenemos ese medicamento. No obstante, puedo ofrecerle un genérico. - We do not have that medicine. Nevertheless, I can offer you a generic.
