The Simple Conditional (Regular): hablaría, comería, viviría

Spanish: El Condicional Simple (Regular): hablaría, comería, viviría

Level: B1 Intermediate

Category: verbs

Explanation

The simple conditional is a verb tense we use to express hypothetical actions, possibilities, wishes, and polite requests. In English it corresponds to "would" + verb: "Yo hablaría" = "I would speak". It is one of the most useful tenses for sounding polite and natural in Spanish. The good news is that the regular conditional is very easy to form. Unlike other tenses, we do NOT remove the infinitive ending. We take the full infinitive (hablar, comer, vivir) and add the same endings for all three groups (-ar, -er, -ir): -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. For example, with "hablar": yo hablaría, tú hablarías, él/ella hablaría, nosotros hablaríamos, vosotros hablaríais, ellos hablarían. Notice that every form has an accent mark on the "í", because the stress always falls on that vowel. We use the conditional in very common everyday situations: to ask for something politely ("¿Podría ayudarme?" - Could you help me?), to give advice ("Yo que tú, estudiaría más" - If I were you, I would study more), to express wishes ("Me gustaría un café" - I would like a coffee), and to talk about imaginary situations ("En tu lugar, no lo haría" - In your place, I would not do it).
