Conditional conjunctions introduce a condition on which another action depends. The most common is "si" (if), but Spanish has a rich set of conjunctions that fine-tune the condition: "siempre que" / "siempre y cuando" (provided that a requirement is met), "con tal de que" (as long as / just so that something happens), "a menos que" / "a no ser que" (unless), and "en caso de que" (in case). Mastering these conjunctions is a B2-level skill. The key grammatical difference lies in verb mood. With "si", the mood depends on the type of conditional sentence: indicative for real conditions ("Si llueve, no salgo" = If it rains, I don't go out) and imperfect subjunctive for hypothetical or unlikely conditions ("Si lloviera, no saldría" = If it rained, I wouldn't go out). It is essential to remember that "si" is NEVER followed by the present subjunctive: you cannot say "si llueva". By contrast, the conjunctions "siempre que", "con tal de que", "a menos que", "a no ser que" and "en caso de que" ALWAYS require the subjunctive when they express a future-oriented or hypothetical condition: "Te ayudo con tal de que me lo pidas" (I'll help you as long as you ask me), "No iré a menos que me inviten" (I won't go unless they invite me). When "siempre que" has a temporal meaning (whenever / every time) rather than conditional, the indicative is used: "Siempre que viene, trae un regalo" (Whenever he comes, he brings a gift). These conjunctions let you express nuances that enrich your speech: a minimal condition ("con tal de que"), an exception ("a menos que"), a sustained requirement ("siempre y cuando"), or a contingency ("en caso de que"). Using them precisely is a hallmark of advanced, natural Spanish.
