Adjective Placement

Spanish: La colocación de los adjetivos

Level: A1 Beginner

Category: adjectives

Explanation

In Spanish, most descriptive adjectives go AFTER the noun, unlike in English. We say "la casa blanca" (literally "the house white"), not "la blanca casa." This is the most important rule for beginners: when you describe a color, shape, nationality, or physical characteristic, the adjective almost always comes after the noun. However, some adjectives go BEFORE the noun. This happens with adjectives that express quantity or number, such as "muchos" (many), "pocos" (few), "dos" (two), and "algunos" (some), as well as certain short, common adjectives. For example: "muchos libros" (many books), "dos cafés" (two coffees), "otra cerveza" (another beer). Remember too that the adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun. If the noun is feminine and plural, the adjective will be as well: "las casas blancas." If it is masculine singular, the adjective will be masculine singular: "el coche rojo." At this level, the most useful practical rule is: to describe what something is like (color, size, shape, origin), put the adjective after the noun. To count or indicate quantity, put it before.
